One Night in Paris
Notes
DM were a bit slow to embrace the DVD format. Their first foray into the format was with DVD BONG 32 for "Freelove". With the majority of DVD singles primarily featuring the music video, the band opted instead to feature a "bootleg" live performance with some very short films of fans' reactions. To call it a failure was an understatement, but in 2002, they entered the DVD fray with a very special release. "One Night in Paris" (released before the infamous sex tape of the same name) documents the band's stop in Paris for their Excitour. The tour was the saving grace of an "Exciter" campaign that failed in many ways. Tracks that were dull and pointless were upgraded considerably for live performances. The reception of the album tracks varied from fan to fan, but the performances of the band's backcatalogue were the true highlights. "Waiting For The Night" and an acoustic "It Doesn't Matter Two" were dusted off for show. The show goes into overdrive when the fans wake up from "Freelove" and get right into "Enjoy the Silence" onwards. "Never Let Me Down Again" reprised its role as the finale of the show, but the grand highlight was the raucous rock and roll reworking of "Black Celebration" complete with its own unique animated tour projection. The release was a double DVD that included tour projections as well as interviews from the band, fans, and Anton Corbijn. For fans with a strong affinity for the band's live releases, this one is a must have. It's indeed a strong release covering a strong tour for a weak release.
