Depeche Mode 101
Notes
It's as good as getting a handshake in person. The band owes a lot of the successes had in 1990 to this documentary. This allowed fans worldwide to share in the experience of both the band in their final stretch of the Masses tour, as well as being in the van with fellow fans, contest winners, who follow the band on their way to the promised land of the 626 aka Pasadena.
The band brought legendary documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker on board to capture the moments of the band achieving what has long eluded them: success in America. Not only do you meet the band and get very familiar with their individual personalities, you're introduced to the crew. You get to meet Daryl Bamonte and Andy Franks running the tour. You meet the band's plucky publicist Teresa Conroy. Towards the end, you meet their manager of the future Johnathan Kessler. The film itself is a forerunner to the wave of reality TV that would come to dominate 90's television and beyond. The scenes with the fans predate MTV's Road Rules by a good five years. Even then, 101's true charm lies in the brilliant collection of one-liners. It's deep with enough impromptu one-liners to make Henny Youngman proud. I'm sure, if you've seen it, at least five of them immediately come to mind. The film was screened in LA and New York for a day before it reached video stores. It would be re-screened in LA again to promote 101's DVD reissue in 2003. Disc 1 features the film with audio commentary from the band and DA Pennebaker. The DVD's second disc comes with as much of the Pasadena show as could be found by Mr. Pennebaker. It also comes with interviews of the band, Jonathan Kessler, and three of the fans who were on the bus.
