A Pain That I The opening track from "Playing the Angel" was a no-brainer to be released as the second single. "A Pain…" served as a hard wake-up call that the band were back from the schnide that plagued the previous album outings. It would also be one of the most dynamic songs the band had released in a long time. Another non-album B-side was assigned to it in the name of "Newborn". It would be yet another song that should have been included on the album. BONG 36 definitely has its gloriously good parts and its gloriously bad parts. Let's start with the good…

12 BONG 36 and LCD BONG 36 contain arguably the best DM remix made in the post Alan Wilder era: the Jacques LuCont mix and dub. This instant classic was premiered worldwide by Pete Tong, sparking another online feeding frenzy until the releases finally arrived. The dance floors of planet earth were very much abuzz with the mix as the band scored an international dance hit. Seemingly gone were the days of the band only releasing the best mixes promo only. Goldfrapp returned again with another brilliantly deconstructed mix for "A Pain…", and again provided accompanying vocals to said mix. As said before, the 7" made its glorious return, this time as a picture disc with a numbered, limited edition production run of 10,000 discs. Glorious indeed.

Now for the gloriously bad…the video. Guess who directed it? Yeah him. Did he use animation? Some but not very much. So what's it like? The band are the feature act in a female demoliton derby/race that is painful indeed to watch, and not in a good way. Maybe he was trying to illustrate the point that people are ultimately people? It would have been more exciting had the band been filmed performing within a flea market. Thankfully for the next release, a lifeline is thrown to the fans by a certain photographer…
