Singles DiscographyI Feel LovedChartsUK (12) Germany (9) Notes
I remember hearing snippets of the new album. Gasp! I realized my nightmare got worse: There were only two good tracks out of the 13 songs. The album later got leaked and it was as I had heard it in snippets. A crappy single preceded an even crappier album. But I digress…(I'm saving those comments for the Exciter page.) Going back to the two songs I thought were good, this one was one of them, but even then, my immediate thought when I heard it was "This sure sounds like a Bjork ripoff." I repeated to myself: "Self, that's why they make remixes." This time I breathed a sigh of relief when I first heard the Danny Tenaglia mix. The wave of crappy and unlistenable mixes continued but this time, the band had sense enough to release Danny's mix commercially. And like a god among insects, the Labour of Love mixes rose to the occasion of saving DM's Exciter campaign from total oblivion. "Hooray!" said I as I admired Tenaglia's use of Shout and My Secret Garden as the basis for his remix masterpiece. Also encouraging was the B-Side "Dirt" which was a cover of The Stooges's classic. It actually sounded better than the original and had the trademark DM sound infused within. Thankfully, Stephan Sedanoui was not retained for this video, but John Hillcoat didn't fare much better. You remember that band that DM was portraying in the "It's No Good" video? Well they found their way to a hot day in Chinatown (LA's Chinatown, actually the whole thing was filmed in Hollywood). This time, they were that washed up band dressed in trendy clothes and performing to, stop me if you've heard this before, an all female crowd. For whatever reason, Hillcoat worked in (poorly) the LAPD's K9 units to sniff out the illegal estrogen festival DM were holding. After years of making videos on their terms (or at least Anton's terms), the band were caving into MTV's way of doing videos in the hopes of them playing the band more. Did it work? Not with this rock video cliché fest. A disturbing trend of crappy singles was being coupled with a trend of filming cheesy videos to accompany them. As the band entered their third decade of recording records, they were clearly trying too hard to attract a new following. The band did manage to find their way back on the Tonight Show but the crowd were noticeably less raucous than they were the first time. The nightmare was somewhat bearable until… US Releases
