…That I was eagerly awaiting a new DM album in the coming year. Then I finished this site just in time for New Year's Day 2001. I was even giddier because of the massive traffic and server crashes that ensued. Despite the technical difficulties, I was quite giddy about things. I remember then picking up the new single with the yellow and orange coloured agave plant Anton put on the cover. Then I played the CD, and the nightmare begins. "Is that it?", I wondered. It sounds like they added some benign drum programming to the acoustic version of Personal Jesus and let it take flight from there. Letdown, I was telling myself, "Self, it's not that bad. That's why they make remixes." Taking comfort in that fact, I listened further to the mixes by a couple of blokes I never heard of called Dave Clarke and Bushwacka. Boring, Lame, Uninspired, and Unlistenable were the four opinions I had. Still in denial, I kept listening and listening, hoping there was something cool I missed, but it was no use. It finally happened, DM released a crappy single after releasing 34 good ones in a row. It didn't stop there. I remember in my dream that the band hired Stephane Sedanoui to direct their video for it and that he was filming it on Route 66. In theory I thought, it can't get much better than that. Stephane had created a string of vivid, memorable videos up to this point, most notably the video for Red Hot Chili Peppers' Give It Away. I was encouraged that the band decided to take their videos to a different direction and given the previous video, they couldn't do worse, right? Wrong again!?!? Despite the ingriedients, Stephane managed to film a multicoloured, disjointed, four minute boredom fest that you see today. Route 66 never looked more miserable. The nightmare would only subside long after the Exciter campaign after listening to a promo only 12" featuring mixes by Morel aka Pink Noise. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Despite it being #1 in Germany and being a relatively successful record in Europe, this is one in a string of the five worst DM single releases. Aside from the promo-only Pink Noise mixes, I have nothing nice to say about any of the mixes released for this song, especially the one they made for its B-Side, Easy Tiger. If you want to listen to a DM track that sounds nothing like DM (and not in a good way), look no further than the Bertrand Burgalat & A.S Dragon Version. Nor was it nice of the band to release said Pink Noise mixes as promo-only. They got away with it during the "It's No Good" campaign but not this time. BONG 30 started a terrible trend of saving their best mixes for promotional only releases. Needless to say, the releases during this period paid the price. The dream/nightmare continues… US Releases
