Martin's penchant for joke titles is limitless. Next to "Music for the Masses" (and perhaps "Exciter"), "It's No Good" ranks among the humorous titles the band has released. The joke's on you if you had to go to your local record shop and ask for it by name. The joke worked and became of the band's biggest hits.
Coupled with the freeflowing, downtempo "Slowblow", BONG 26 sports an excellent crop of fresh remixes as well as another iconic image associated with the release: the upside down trefoil. Dom T provides more bounce to the ounce with his Bass Bounce mix. Now you remember Hardfloor don’t you? the masters of the 303? You may know them best for turning in a legendary mix for New Order's "Blue Monday '95". They provide an equally impressive mix that combines their trademark 303 bass with some jeep beats. The band had a good ear as they picked Mute labelmate Speedy J to contribute an unforgettable hard jungle Speedy J mix. Before it went underground, Jungle or Drum & Bass reached its commercial pinnacle with the Prodigy's "The Fat of The Land" campaign. Taking full advantage, the band would be sure to feature at least one Jungle-styled mix for each of the "Ultra" releases. Arguably, the most talked about mixes came from one Peter Raufhouer. You know him as Club 69. Before his mixes for Cher, Madonna, and the Pet Shop Boys to name a few, his set of mixes for "It's No Good" was his breakthrough. Unfortunately, it was originally rejected for commercial release by the band. Reprise thought differently and issued a promo 12" run of 2000 copies, just enough for the radio stations nationwide to play it. And play it they did. The demand for the unattainable mix was integral in the band's return to Top 40 radio. Mute quickly followed suit by issuing a promo 12" of their own, limited to 200 copies. The rest was history as the band scored consecutive Top 5 hits for the first time in the UK. BONG 26 got even more promolicious with a one-off live cd featuring "It's No Good" live as its sole track. This promo CD with a commercial prefix (XLCD) features a custom brown sleeve featuring the now trademark trefoils. I don't know why but it's extremely rare. As the joke title suggests, the band take themselves even less seriously in the video as they portray a washed up, Roxy Music looking lounge act eventually making their way to the Hotel Ultra. It's arguably the funniest video of the lot (in terms of actual humour, not being the most laughable). The ending is truly priceless.

Notes: No picture sleeve. The "Club 69 Mixes" of It's No Good became one of the biggest dance hits of 1997. The band did not want to release these mixes commercially because they felt that Dave's vocals were sped up too fast on the mixes. Reprise believed in these mixes and subsequently printed 2000 white label promo 12"s. Sure enough, It's No Good topped the US Dance Charts with an unlikely major boost from radio as well as clubs. Then the Club 69 fever, and subsequent bootlegs hit the UK clubs.
So Mute got into the Promo action, combating the bootlegs with PL12 Bong 26. Mute, however, only made 200 copies, and just included the three Club 69 mixes exclusively. With their limited production runs, the Club 69 Promos, join Mute's Dance Bong 13 (Strangelove Promo 12" w/Phil Harding's The Fresh Ground Mix) as the "Holy Grails" of Depeche promo 12" singles. Incidentally the US & UK Club 69 Promos and Dance Bong 13 promo are both currently valued at $100-$300 each | | ^ Return to Top ^ |
