Singles DiscographyIn Your RoomChartsUK (8) Germany (24) Notes
A tranquil Atlanta skyline at dusk with a white lightbulb superimposed over it served as the cover art for 12 and CD BONG 24. With the lightbulb concept, Anton Corbijn managed to assign unforgettable DM icons to three of the past four SOFAD singles. You had the indiviual I's for "I Feel You", the Bird Woman for "Walking in My Shoes", and now the lightbulb(s) for "In Your Room". The packaging of a certain CD BONG 24 turned the release into a "Do It Yourself" CD box set, making the release the closest a BONG would become a body of work in art as well as in function. The "Torso" disc included featured Butch Vig's Zephyr mixes. The atmosphere contained in the album version was sacrificed to make room for heavier guitars and a harder, more precise drum loop. It was a total departure of the epic album version and a point of much debate within the band as Dave campaigned heavily for it. Live tracks for "Never Let Me Down Again" and "Death's Door" round out the torso. The "Left Arm" disc for LCD BONG 24 was another live EP that complements the previous live ep for BONG 23 nicely. With those two combined, you get all the "Violator" singles live, plus "Halo" and a brilliant live rework of "Fly on the Windscreen". Incidently, L12 BONG 24 is an all live EP containing all the live tracks released for this single campaign. The "Right Arm" disc for XLCD BONG 24 features more mixes from Johnny Dollar/Portishead, Brian Eno, and a standout remix by Francois Kervorkian for "Higher Love". We were totally spoiled back in 1990 with his mixes. With the SOFAD campaign winding down, we got one last mix from the legend himself. Put the discs together within the CD BONG 24 packaging, you get a stick-figure Dave with his arms opened wide. The open folds also resemble a stick-figure Dave in a crucifix position as well. I wonder what that means? Maybe Anton had an idea that the band would not be the same or maybe continuing afterwards. With lightbulb firmly attached atop the screen, he put together a subtle compilation of his past video themes all in one video, using one model to channel them all (she may have needed therapy herself after all that channeling). When you watch, they become easily recognizable. Meanwhile, Anton managed to keep the band chained down together one last time, albeit individually. He also managed, one more time, to capture the band performing in a room as a unit like he did before on "I Feel You". This time, Fletch was playing a piano which I'm sure was unplugged, while Alan belted way on the drums one last time. No longer would he be drumming for the band, or playing a drummer on TV for them, or producing, or turning Martin's acoustic demos into musical gems one note at a time. The new guy turned keeper of the sound would part ways with the band one year after this release, and neither band nor fans would be the same after. US Releases
