Walking in My Shoes My Joy, the B-side for me. My Joy, good for all devotees. My Joy! You know the rest. I told you DM were never going to be the same. After releasing more than two albums worth of B-sides exclusive to their respective singles, the output of B-sides would come to a minimum. In fact, "My Joy" is the only non-album B-side released for the entire campaign. You'd have to wait until Ultra for some non-album B-side lovin'. Was this still the same band from Basildon?

Anywho, in case you haven't heard the song, "Walking in My Shoes" was an instant classic the moment it was unleashed and was destined to be the next single after "I Feel You". The new rockier sound was present, yet it was a highly polished production. Anton was up to his old tricks as he created a new icon, the Bird Woman. Picture a hotter, less feathery (or clothed for that matter), and more artistic looking daughter of the San Diego Chicken. The bird imagery would play a significant role in the band's tour projections as well as in the videoclip made for BONG 22. But I'm getting a bit ahead of myself.

The 'Shoes benefit greatly from an excellent crop of remixes. Fans received their first taste of Portishead on the Grungy Gonads Mix, a collaboration with Johnny Dollar. Mixing tribal drums and viciously deep bass lines, Spirit Feel contributed the Anandamidic Mix, leaving many with blown woofers. William Orbit comes into his own with the Random Carpet mix. He would play an instrumental role in the success of Madonna's "Ray of Light" album later in the 90's. The band with SOFAD mixer Mark Stent also contribute not only the obligatory 7" and 12" mixes, but also the Ambient Whale mix. Sounding like it came right out of Star Trek IV, the Ambient Whale mix features whale song accompanied by a mostly instrumental mix. Very tranquil.

Anton's up to his cheeky old tricks again. In fact, this video, the closest of the five to the spirit of the SOFAD concept and themes, may as well be all about cheeks. From cheeks pressed up against glass, to the cheeks of the extras dressed in full Olde English garb, to the cheeks of the young ladies who… Now I'm giving too much away! Cheek it out for yourself.
