Not many were ready for the sound that erupted but also the new look Dave. Missing from sight was the healthy, tanned, white jeans wearing frontman that was everywhere not even three years previously. He was replaced with a long haired, pale, skinny, striped vest and jacket wearing, goatee having incarnation of Dave. As if that wasn't enough, her he was singing about feeling me, well not me specifically. Behind the voice was a new harder, guitar driven sound. As the new Dave spazzed away in a way that would make Mick Jagger proud, the other three, not nearly as transformed, were performing like a full band. Sure Mart was using a guitar which wasn't nearly as foreign as it used to be. Fletch was behind a keyboard which I'm sure was unplugged. But most notable of the depicted performing band was Alan behind a drum kit, percussing away as if he's been doing it since birth. We know he wasn't natively a drummer but played one on TV, frequently. This time, it was the real deal and even played half the tour behind a large set. When the video was over, fans were left breathless and bemused over what they had just witnessed. This black & white video may not have been Anton's best, but it was far and away the most impactful of the lot. It was an unforgettable portrait and a taste of things to come. Enough about the video, BONG 21 was quite successful as fans worldwide had to wait three years for the follow up to BONG 20. "I Feel You" became the first release to debut in the US Top 40. As fans purchased the release in stores, seemingly all at once, their high debut was unsustainable and tumbled quickly off the charts. Something peculiar happened when US fans visited their local shops: there were two CD releases for the same song. Already commonplace in European markets since the development of the 5" CD single, US fans were treated to two trifold CD single releases containing four tracks each while documenting the bands new look with pictures on each fold. A new crop of mixes by Mark Stent, Supereal, Renegade Soundwave, Brian Eno also documented and accentuated the band's new direction. To whet fans' appetites for more DM, "One Caress" was included. It served up another classical B-side dish you come to expect from the band. Curiously, the strings were real and not synthesized. Also curiously, it would also join "I Feel You" on the upcoming album. The band would film a video for it while they were on tour in Chicago. The director commisioned was Kevin Kerslake, who was best known for the Nirvana videos during their "Nevermind" campaign. US Releases
