From the distinct opening notes, to the brilliant B-Sides, to the iconic imagery of the silhouetted band members making hand glasses, to the timeless crop of excellent mixes, BONG 20 is the total package. Despite its relatively poor chart placement compared to the past three releases, "World in My Eyes" enjoys an enduring popularity among both the fans and the band. "Happiest Girl" and "Sea of Sin" are excellent companions and would be that much more beloved had they been included on "Violator".

It may sound like a broken record (in a repetitive sense of course), but BONG 20 hosts an outstanding assortment of mixes. Francois Kervorkian brings more Kraftwerk into an already Kraftwerk influenced set of tracks. Jon Marsh of The Beloved contributes with the classic house mixes entitled "Mode to Joy" and "Mayhem Mode". The enigmatic Orb contribute the classic Pulsating Orbiatal remix for "Happiest Girl" which sound fabulous in both vocal and instrumental forms. When you put all the mixes together on one disc, as the Japanese originally did before Mute reissued it worldwide, you get one outstanding remix album.

Two versions of the videoclip made for BONG 20 exist. The first one featured Dave and a model watching World Violation Tour footage in a drive-in from a classic convertible. The other version appears on Strange Too featuring all four members in said convertible. Would you believe the first version was banned from MTV? It's true. As the story goes, the model featured in the video was apparently murdered, and at the request of her family had MTV ban the clip from its rotation, effectively killing DM's chance for a fourth consecutive smash.

After this record, the band's single backcatalogue became highly sought after by US fans, prompting Mute & Sire to release the first three singles boxes. The release of this single also signalled the end of an era. The band worked hard touring and recording nonstop every year for the past 10 years. Worldwide success came in on a gradual wave, starting domestically, then spreading to Deutschland, then Europe, then Japan, then America. At this point, the members of the band took a year-long break away from each other. When it was over, both Depeche Mode and their fans were never the same again.
