Notes

Strangelove 88In the US, "Strangelove" was re-released after DM's successful "Concert for the Masses" in Pasadena, which would be released in 1989 as "Depeche Mode 101". Sire felt that the single didn't do as well as it should have in 1987 but felt strongly enough to back it for another go in 1988. To capitalize on the band's triumph, Sire unleashed the Highjack mix, done by Bomb the Bass (Tim Simenon and Mark Saunders) along with a Justin Strauss mixed version of "Nothing". The 12" release helped "Strangelove" become a bigger dance hit at clubs all across the US and received strong airplay in most of the US major radio markets. The band even performed the song on MTV's Video Music Awards with Arsenio Hall presenting them as a "ghetto favourite".

Sire also made the band film another video for "Strangelove". The band totally refused but caved in. For not even DM couldn't pass up the possibility of big success in the US. So Martin Atkins was hired on to film the band surrounded by their own Music for the Masses symbolism, but was devoid of the signature megaphone that was prevalent in Anton's promo. The re-release peaked at #50 and was by far Sire's best promotion effort of the band. Collectively with the previous BONG 13 campaign, this was at this point DM's most successful follow-up to "People Are People", and would set the band up for future single and album successes with "Violator", "Songs of Faith and Devotion", and "Ultra".
